Self-Reflection #3: The Art of Persuasion

Module 3: The Art of Persuasion is persuading your audience to understand the passion for an idea. My classmates and I had to do a digital persuading assignment about an idea that we want our audience to be enthusiastic about. There were three appeals that our professor wanted us to use in our presentation: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. However, the video lectures and appeals quiz worksheet were the first assignments. Also, we had to watch advertisements to get an understanding of how each appeal is used. We had to apply one or more appeals to our presentation. In addition to the assignment, we had video options and formats on how we could present the video such as doing a PowerPoint, using Prezi, screen pal, or using our cellphones. Our English Composition professor curated assignment videos on YouTube about each format that the class can use. For a persuading argument, there is still some brainstorming to do because brainstorming plays a crucial role in persuasive writing.

For this module, there are two brainstorming techniques that I used. The first technique was to gather ideas for my topic. The topic I chose is tea. Tea is a universal topic that everyone could relate to. I was confused about a topic, but it came to the light that I do not have to make it hard for myself. The ideas that I generated for tea were about quality than quantity. However, tea is a broad topic because it is so much about tea and how it can be used. The questions I asked myself about tea is “What is tea, where was tea discovered, Is tea healthy physically and cognitively?” The ideas for tea were straightforward to come across. There were no right or wrong discussions about tea besides the caffeine in some teas. It was a semi-hard assignment to put it all together because tea is a broad topic.

Second, brainwriting is a brainstorming technique. Brainwriting consists of writing your ideas down then organizing them on paper using your brain. Brainwriting is writing down whatever comes to your head about that topic. Brainwriting is an effective brainstorming technique in any writing or video presentation.

However, there were some challenges that were faced in this assignment. The ideas for tea were challenging because it was so much to choose from and talk about. You would be talking forever dealing with broad topics. You would have to consolidate each idea about your topic. Another challenge I faced in Module 3 is reminding myself of the three appeals that I needed to use. I kept watching more YouTube videos about each appeal. The last challenge to face is deciding how I want to do my presentation. I did not know which format I wanted to use. I thought about which would be easier for me. I have used PowerPoint before so I immediately thought that I could use PowerPoint. I did not want to use my cell phone because I felt like it was an unprofessional way for an assignment. The videos you make on your cell phone should be for personal use only.

The obstacle I overcame was understanding the assignment. Being a college student when the finals are approaching, you are in crunch time for everything. The course finals and dealing with a writing assignment could be a scary thought because you must organize your ideas and sentences to make a perfect paper.

In conclusion, the assignment was not hard at all. Although persuading your audience about a topic you are enthusiastic about could be the tricky part. You might not be able to get everybody’s attention on a topic that you are enthusiastic about. You must try with your best techniques to gain the experience of persuading someone.
